Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Guide
In the previous chapter, we discussed what SEO is and why it matters. Now it is time to examine the specific elements that search engines such as Google consider when determining your website’s rankings. These elements are known as SEO factors, and understanding and optimizing them is essential for achieving success in search engines in 2025.
Imagine Google as a highly intelligent librarian who must select the best book—the webpage—based on the reader’s query. It evaluates the book according to multiple criteria: how well it is written, which represents the content; how logically it is structured, which represents the technical aspect; and how trustworthy and popular it is among other readers and experts, which represents authority. These criteria are SEO factors.
Traditionally, SEO factors are divided into two main categories: On-Page and Off-Page. However, it is also important to consider technical factors as a separate category.
1. Off-Page SEO Factors
These SEO factors are based on signals outside your website and reflect its authority, reputation, and trustworthiness. Although you have less direct control over them, you can still influence them indirectly:
- Backlinks: Links from other websites to your website. This is one of the most important Off-Page SEO factors. Google interprets them as a form of recommendation or vote. However, backlink quality and relevance matter more than quantity. One link from an authoritative and topically relevant website is far more valuable than numerous links from low-quality or unrelated websites.
- Brand reputation and mentions: How people discuss your brand online through reviews, social media, forums, and other platforms, even when no direct backlink is included.
- Social signals: Although social activity does not directly determine rankings, it increases content visibility and can indirectly contribute to earning backlinks.
2. On-Page SEO Factors
These are the SEO factors that you can control directly on your website’s pages:
- Content quality and relevance: This is the most important factor. Your content should be:
- Helpful: It should answer the user’s search intent fully and accurately.
- Original: It should not be copied from other websites.
- Based on E-E-A-T: It should demonstrate the author’s Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. This is particularly important for YMYL topics.
- Well-structured and readable: It should use headings, subheadings, short paragraphs, and lists.
- Keyword optimization: Your target keywords should be integrated naturally into the text, headings, title tag, meta description, and image alt text. However, avoid excessive repetition and keyword stuffing.
- HTML element optimization:
- Title Tag: It should be unique, descriptive, and include the primary keyword.
- Meta Description: It should contain compelling text that encourages users to click on your result in the SERP.
- Header Tags: Use H1–H6 tags to organize content logically.
- Image Alt Text: This describes an image for search engines and users, including those using screen readers.
- Internal links: Creating logical connections between your website’s pages helps users navigate and enables search engines to understand the structure and relationships between your content.
3. Technical SEO Factors
This category ensures that your website functions correctly and can be processed efficiently by search engines. It includes:
- Website speed and Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP, and CLS indicate how quickly your pages load and how stable they are during use.
- Mobile-friendliness: Your website must display and function correctly on mobile devices. This is critical because of Mobile-First Indexing.
- Indexability: Search engine crawlers must be able to find and index your content. Important tools include the XML sitemap and robots.txt file.
- Website architecture: Your website should have a logical structure and simple navigation.
- Security: Your website should use an encrypted HTTPS connection.
- Structured data: Schema Markup helps search engines understand the context and meaning of your content more accurately.
Important: These SEO factors do not work in isolation. Achieving the best results requires balanced and combined optimization. For example, excellent content cannot reach its full potential if the website is technically unreliable, loads slowly, or lacks sufficient authority through relevant backlinks.
Unethical SEO Methods: “Toxins”
Some tactics are designed to deceive search engines and increase rankings artificially. These practices—including keyword stuffing, buying backlinks, cloaking, and copying content—can result in Google penalties, a significant decline in rankings, or even the complete removal of your website from Google’s index.
We will discuss these methods in greater detail later in the guide. For now, remember that you should always focus on creating value for users and using ethical SEO practices.
Vertical and Niche SEO
The fundamental SEO factors are universal. However, certain niches, including local businesses, news websites, and ecommerce platforms, may have additional requirements and specific considerations. We will also examine these nuances throughout this guide.
In the next chapter, we will explore the role of content in greater detail and examine the specific factors that support the creation of high-quality, user-focused content—the foundation of successful SEO optimization in 2025.
